As it was the BIG story that all around the world were talking about, and that’s Greta Thunberg suing Sweden over the climate crisis… yes, just when you where at home thinking, what has Greta been up to after she trashed the latest COP27 meeting for promoting false solutions…
Taking to Twitter, Thunberg wrote – QUOTE: “Today on Black Friday is the perfect day to sue the state over its insufficient climate policies. So that’s what we did. “See you in court!” // END QUOTE.
But she is not alone, she was joined by 600 other plaintiffs in a lawsuit against Sweden. Attempt at a cheap an easy cash grab, or are they being serious?
All who a part of the lawsuit, claim that Sweden’s climate policies violated the constitution along with The European Convention Of Human Rights.
From what I understand, Sweden adopted a climate law in 2017 requiring the government to work to reduce emissions of planet-warming gases toward a net-zero target set for 2045 – similar to what we’ve done here in Australia.
And this group, believe that the Swedish state has failed to meet the constitutional requirement to promote sustainable development leading to a good environment for present and future generations.
So, lets make this relevant for us, Remember in September when the Australian Federal Government passed a Climate Change Bill ensuring Australia’s emissions reduction target of 43 per cent and net zero emissions by 2050, what happens when those target are not reached? Will activist in Australia sue!? Or will Greta come down under on her non-polluting boat to have a crack at the Australian justice system?
But let’s look at the reality of all this, as bold and as brave as a move that this is, from Greta and her climate crew, good luck winning that case.
Imagine the precedent it would set for being able to sue a government for not keeping to a promise it made! And the historical back case can of worms it would open?!

Makes you realise, you should never get into arguments about climate change… It always turns into a heated debate.
